Green Streaming: Research Project on Energy Efficiency in Video Streaming Successfully Completed

13.10.2026

‍

In the joint research project Green Streaming, LOGIC media solutions developed foundations and blueprints for more energy-efficient media production and distribution. After more than three years, the research project officially concluded on July 31, 2026.

‍

Energy Consumption Across the Entire Streaming Chain

The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Participants were Fraunhofer FOKUS (consortium lead), Deutsche Telekom, rbb, KlimAktiv and LOGIC media solutions. The goal was to make energy consumption measurable from production through encoding to the content delivery network and end devices, and to use this as a basis for developing more energy-efficient architectures. The project was prompted by rapidly growing video usage, which increases energy and resource demand, while the energy consumption of different production methods had been difficult to compare until now.

‍

LOGIC’s Contribution

LOGIC was responsible for the work package on media production and distribution. The team examined and compared the energy consumption of on-premises, remote, hybrid and cloud productions under real-world conditions. This resulted in architecture blueprints, in particular for live cloud production workflows and the Time-addressable Media Store (TAMS).

In addition, several proofs of technology and proofs of concept were implemented, including NDI over WAN, personalized highlight clips with TAMS and various measurement infrastructures. In parallel, LOGIC further developed its PORTAL software, including the orchestration of cloud and hybrid resources, on-premises control and multi-region signal distribution. An energy dashboard is also new.

‍

Results for Practice

The results give broadcasters, production companies, cloud, CDN and streaming providers, and all companies with video-based workflows a practical basis for better-informed and more sustainable architecture and infrastructure decisions. They are complemented by surveys, expert presentations, demonstrators and a white paper.
